Assurance in Salvation

Assurance in Salvation

From Carlos,
Friend of Christ

Reflection:
If you were to die today, how confident are you that you will go to heaven? 50%, 75%, 90%? 100%? We need to be certain of what is true. In court, this is established by the testimony of a witness who swears that they know certainly that something is true.

Scripture for Meditation: 1 John 5:13 (NLT)
"I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life."

Deep Dive:
God is the witness concerning His Son (John 5:37). The scriptures are His record. And what does the record (God) promise (testify)? Eternal life (1 John 5:11). As children of God, we have a Father who cannot lie, and His word is always true (John 17:17).

The assurance of our salvation rests not on our feelings but on the unchanging truth of God's word. According to 1 John 5:13, we can know with certainty that we have eternal life because we believe in the name of the Son of God. This assurance is grounded in the testimony of God Himself, who has given us His record in the scriptures. John 5:37 affirms that God the Father testifies about His Son, and this testimony is trustworthy and true.

As believers, our confidence in eternal life is anchored in the unchanging nature of God—He is a Father who cannot lie (Titus 1:2). His word, as truth (John 17:17), assures us of the promise of eternal life. This assurance is not based on our own merit but on God's steadfast character and faithfulness to His word. Our salvation is secured through God's Word and the redemptive sacrifice of Christ, who saved us from judgment through the shedding of His blood (1 Peter 1:18-20; Hebrews 9:22). Therefore, as God is our witness and His Word stands as His testimony, we find assurance of our salvation and the eternal life we have in Christ.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. How can you be sure of your salvation?
  2. What makes us safe from eternal judgment? In what are you trusting for your salvation?
  3. How does knowing that God Himself testifies about His Son strengthen your confidence in your salvation (John 5:37)?
  4. In what ways does the promise of eternal life in 1 John 5:11 bring peace and assurance to your heart?
  5. How can you remind yourself daily of God's unchanging truth as the foundation of your assurance (John 17:17)?
  6. What steps can you take to deepen your trust in God's word and His promises concerning your eternal life?

As we reflect on the assurance of our salvation, may these truths deepen our confidence in God's unwavering promise and the eternal life we have through faith in Jesus Christ.

Worship Through Song:

     Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the assurance of eternal life that You have given us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to trust in Your word and Your promises, knowing that You are a God who cannot lie. Strengthen our faith and give us confidence in our salvation as we rest in the truth of Your scriptures. Guide us in our daily walk with You, and may our lives reflect the peace and assurance that come from knowing we are Your children. Amen.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
